Line Boring - M&A Engineering Ltd
General Information
M&A - Line Boring Services
M & A Engineering Ltd are able to offer a comprehensive range of line-boring equipment, with the capability of machining bores from 58mm diameter (2¼”) to in excess of 2m (78¾”).
One of the unique design features of our equipment is the ability to mount optical targets in the centre bore of each modular section of bar. This allows a ‘line of sight’ to be taken when checking the alignment of bores, without the need to remove the boring equipment, thus reducing down time and increasing accuracy.
M & A’s in-house designed, and proprietary boring equipment can be applied to any site environment; for example: Petro-Chemical, Marine, Steel Production, Aggregate Production, Power Generation etc.
Stern-Tube Shaft Misalignment (MCS Lenie)
After experiencing some vibration, extreme temperatures within the bearing housings and several bearing wipes, the customer suspected a bearing misalignment problem. However, they could not identify the area of concern, so M&A were called to perform an optical alignment check of the stern tube to the gearbox, to prove and locate the alignment error, and correct it!
Firstly, we set a datum target at the gearbox end and placed a light to illuminate the target.
Note: A total of five targets were used between the outboard – outer bearing and the gearbox to accurately perform this alignment survey.

Then, we set a datum targets at the outboard – outer and outboard – inner bearing and once this is established, we then have a line of sight, which in this instance, was over an eight metre span.
When the line of sight is established (through hollow bar with integral targets), we could check the deviation on the centreline of the outboard – outer bearing, and the inboard – inner bearing in relation to the gearbox.
The alignment check showed a misalignment within the inboard bearing. This error was shown as 0.85mm higher than the gearbox and 0.2mm to port. The customer did not wish to move the gearbox and an in-situ machining repair was the only option. As shown in the photos below, M&A then corrected the error, working to customer specification, with an inline-boring repair. Oversized bearing were then fitted and the shaft was replaced to the customer’s satisfaction.
M&A Engineering Ltd has the proven expertise and equipment to undertake any line boring application, on any type of equipment, anywhere in the world.
